SAVE ALFRETON

COUNTRYSIDE

About Us

Save Alfreton Countryside is an action group formed to oppose two adjoining solar farms and a battery energy storage system on 262 acres of agricultural fields in rural Derbyshire.  This Kronos Solar scheme fell across the boundary of two local authorities.

Our supporters submitted over 1,200 objections and raised many thousands of pounds for professional services.

In December 2021, the Alfreton South application was unanimously refused by Amber Valley Borough Council.

In March 2022, Kronos withdrew the Alfreton North application.

In June 2022, Kronos appealed the Alfreton South decision.

In December 2022, after a public enquiry at which Save Alfreton Countryside was a Rule 6 party, the appeal was dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate (ref 3299953).

Now we are campaigning to save more countryside in the immediate area from two housing developments.  Please help by submitting your objections to Amber Valley Borough Council.  Thank you.

Alfreton North Solar Development Plan:

A birds-eye-view of what could happen to the last remaining piece of Alfreton's countryside if Kronos are successful in their appeal.

Save Our Countryside are dedicated to fighting this appeal to avoid the following:

  • The devastation of Amber Valley landscape
  • Massive loss of habitat to wildlife
  • Huge reduction in available farm land
  • Heart breaking loss of an amenity that has been enjoyed for generations
  • 2.25-meter fences will be erected around the entire perimeter and all of the footpaths
  • All fences will be manned by CCTV every 150 meters

The area under proposal is predominantly north facing making it sub-optimal for harvesting solar energy. It is for this reason that Kronos Solar, the developer responsible for the application, have applied for such a gigantic site.

Whilst we absolutely understand the need for renewable energy and are supportive of the Government’s legally binding target to reach net zero emissions by 2050, and the role the local Councils should play in supporting this initiative, we think this should not come at the expense of open countryside when other brown field or previously developed sites have not been considered.

Kronos Solar, the developer, are a German company with just 2 UK employees. All profits from this project will return to Germany, there will be no lasting employment in the UK, let alone Amber Valley.
